Rogue Night at Harry’s Hofbrau

It had been a while since I met up with my brother, and much, much longer since I met up with my friend, J. Our schedules simply didn’t match up well. But we finally met up a couple nights ago for some beers at Harry’s Hofbrau.

My brother first grabbed dinner there.

I was focused on beer, and that night featured some beers from Oregon’s Rogue Ales.

There were three Rogue beers to taste.

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar (a Brown Ale beer style).

Rogue Chocolate Stout (an American Stout beer style).

Rogue Double Mocha Porter (a Porter beer style).

Folks engaged in beer talk, including the representative on hand for the pouring and Peter from BetterBeerBlog.

Rogue glassware.

And Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale (a German Maibock beer style) for me.

St. Bernardus Abt 12 (10.50% ABV), Belgium, for my brother.

My brother’s and buddy’s turns for beer tasting.

They also enjoyed some appetizers.

While I checked out the schedule of upcoming beer nights. I’ve attended the July 28 Chimay night as well as the Bear Republic Night back in mid-July.

Unfortunately, mainly because of  work and family schedules, it’ll be tricky to meet up again with my buddy any time soon. So it was especially nice to catch up with him a couple of nights ago.

Always Grateful,

~Andy

A Great Sunday

A little series of snapshots from two Sundays ago:

Went to the gym with the toddler. Afterwards, the toddler enjoyed a mini-cupcake while we sat and listened to live music.

Tasted some cherries from the farmers’ market.

Came home to a lovely lunch.

We then made our way to a BBQ hosted by good friends.

Right off the bat, the toddler made himself at home.

As did I:

Home brewed IPA (India Pale Ale). Oh. My. Goodness.

Firestone Walker DBA (Double Barrel Ale).

Mission St. 1967 IPA.

Full Sail IPA.

The food was amazing. I ate a ton.

Wifey was especially into the tea.

We all had a great time at the BBQ thanks to our awesome hosts.

Exercise. Nice weather. A lot of play. Excellent food, drinks, and entertainment. Wonderful friends. Just a really, really nice Sunday.

Always Grateful,

~Andy

Better Brew Tasting Beer Festival at the Fourth Annual SubZERO Festival

Continuing from the previous post, the third part of the SubZERO Festival this year was pretty much the main reason we attended – the Better Brew Tasting Garden presented by Lagunitas Brewing and hosted by the Better Beer Blog. I was a full-on participant. Smile

What can I say? I enjoyed all the beers I tasted. And it was a treat to try many new ones.

Undoubtedly, the Better Brew Tasting Beer Festival was a success. THANKS, PETER!

What a bonus to have met up with friends.

We hung out. Talked. Laughed. Ate. Drank. Walked around.

This year’s festival was the first to incorporate gourmet food trucks as well as a beer festival. What a perfect combination! Plus, the community and fellowship elevated the experience to a whole, new level.

San Jose and the South Bay. Home to some great local craft beer. Great gourmet food trucks. A vibrant arts and culture scene. A wonderful community. Yet, I get a sense that we’re on the ground floor and that better and greater things are yet to come in these regards.

Always Grateful,

~Andy (made and raised in San Jose)

SJ Eats – A Moveable Feast at the Fourth Annual SubZERO Festival

What is San Jose’s SubZERO Festival? I’ll let their website help explain:

Focused on emerging and present subcultures thriving in our region, SubZERO is a diy, artistically bent, hi/lo-techno mashup where street meets geek. Come downtown on June 3rd to San Jose’s SoFA District from 6pm ’til midnight for an inspired evening of arts & culture. In addition to the South FIRST FRIDAYS monthly art walk you’ll find outdoor stages of entertainment plus artists, performers & musicians celebrating the indie creative spirit!

We enjoyed the SubZERO Festival much more than we thought we would. The main reason is that we ended up staying a lot longer than originally planned.

There were basically three parts to this festival.

The first part was all about art. Alas, we didn’t spend nearly enough time appreciating this first part.

As wifey and I were focused on getting to the food truck gathering and beer festival, it was the toddler who noticed, and insisted that we take a much closer look at, these animals that were hanging around. And then a random dude walked by and informed us that most of these animals were, in fact, extinct. Very cool and poignant artwork courtesy of the San Jose Yarnbombers.

Oddly Even performing.

Great art on the outside of a building wall.

The toddler spotted this in the sky directly over us – a dragon spitting out smoke and flames.

Troy Joseph Curtis performing with other talented musicians.

Jhameel. Learned about him about a week ago thanks to the SubZERO website. Really like his music. You can go download his album right now for free. But please make a donation. Again, I don’t know him personally, but I like that he went to Cal (Go Bears!). Didn’t think we’d be staying late enough to watch him perform, so catching a couple of his songs with the toddler was awesome.

Now, the second part featuring food trucks, SJ Eats – A Moveable Feast, was a big reason why we attended SubZERO.

Bill’s Beer Steamed Hot Dogs.

The Wow – silogs.

Treatbot – karaoke ice cream.

Tikka Bytes – Indian.

MoBowl – rice bowls.

An the Go – garlic noodles.

An the Go’s An Family’s Garlic Noodles.

Cabana Dave’s – world cuisine.

Cabana Dave’s baby back ribs.

Cabana Dave’s sweet potato fries.

The toddler and me.

Time for ice cream.

Treatbot’s Ryan, the organizer of SJ Eats, with the toddler. I embarrassed myself even more than last time while talking with him.

Strawberry for the toddler. And mango for the toddler’s friend. I had a taste of the strawberry, and it was amazing.

Hard to believe that there wasn’t a food truck element at last year’s SubZERO. But then again, gourmet food trucks have only recently, it seems, come into their own in San Jose. THANK YOU, RYAN, for your vision and leadership with that!

The next post has my take on the third part of SubZERO – the Better Brew Tasting Beer Festival.

Always Grateful,

~Andy

2006 Concha y Toro Don Melchor Cabernet Savignon

We were thankful for many reasons this past Thanksgiving, not the least of which was the chance to enjoy a bottle of the 2006 Don Melchor Cabernet Savignon by Chile’s Concha y Toro Winery.

2008 Don Melchor Cabernet Savignon. 2008 Don Melchor Cabernet Savignon.

This wine was a generous and thoughtful gift from a friend, who knew that wifey and I greatly enjoy a smooth Cabernet Savignon.

2008 Don Melchor Cabernet Savignon.

While enjoying a glass of this memorably smooth, sublime wine, I couldn’t help but think about my past and current friends, as well as the multiple, related topics of friendships, true friends, and the trials and tribulations of maintaining meaningful relationships. Seriously, these topics are kinda funny, strange, and perhaps kinda sad for both wifey and I. Thank goodness we’ve got each other, that we’re unequivocally each other’s best friends. Cue the emo music, please.

2008 Don Melchor Cabernet Savignon.

It’s been way too long since I’ve last talked to this person who gave us this wine. I’m going to make a point to check in and see how it’s been going and to, again, thank my friend for this awesome, memorable wine.

Always Grateful,

~Andy
