Tied House Brewery and El Toro Brewing Co.

Back in October, wifey and I visited Mountain View’s Tied House Brewery and Café and Morgan Hill’s El Toro Brewing Co. Brewpub.

Tied House hosted a “Lupulin for Lupus” fundraiser organized by the folks associated with the BetterBeerBlog.

Proceeds from four donated casks were to benefit a lupus foundation.

Alpha Session from Drake’s Brewing and Hops on Rye from Firehouse Brewing.

Appetizer and raffles.

Mr. and Mrs. BetterBeerBlog.

We’re so glad to have been able to attend this event. We drank tasty beer, caught up with good folks, got to meet Tied House’s director of marketing, and did our little part in helping out a good cause. Tied House, for sure, is going to be a place we’ll be returning to often.

A few days after having visited Tied House, we stopped by El Toro Brewing Co. on our way back from a trip to Gilroy Gardens.

El Toro IPA and Deuce Imperial IPA.

The beers were excellent, and the food hit the spot as well.

El Toro Brewing Co. is another place that we’ll certainly be returning to.

Cheers! Prost! Gun bae!

More Beers from Earlier this Year

Our foray into the better beer world really started earlier this year with the SF Beer Week South Bay event, Meet the Brewers Beer Festival in San Jose, back in February. Since then, wifey and I have been interested in trying different beers and paying closer attention to beer styles and their corresponding characteristics.

This post is a catch-up post reflecting more of the beers (through pictures) that we’ve had throughout this past year up to roughly the end of summer. We enjoyed all of these beers, as wifey and I have similar, flexible tastes.

The below draft beer is the Marzen from Sudwerk Brewery in Davis, which we got at a great Davis restaurant, Caffe Italia.

Again, wifey and I enjoyed all these beers. Our interest in and appreciation for good beer have been growing greatly, and it’s been fun. :) We’ve been starting to keep tasting notes, of which I’ll start posting more going forward.

Cheers! Prost! Gun bae!

3rd Annual Foodbuzz Blogger Festival Taste Pavilion Part 2 of 2

Time was running out for us at the Taste Pavilion, and wifey and I knew that we had to head home soon. But not before making these last stops:

We returned to the fine folks at Bison Brewing and their beer!

Catching up with Sarah (AKA Mama Pea) from Peas and Thank You. It’s great seeing the success of Sara’s book of the same name, as wifey followed her original blog three years ago. Looking forward to her next book.

We saw Tyler Florence up close. I repeatedly heard different folks say something similar to: “Not only is he hot, but he’s sooooo down to earth!!!”

Seemed like a very likable guy.

All these pictures show why we had such a good time at the Taste Pavilion. We already can’t wait for next year’s Foodbuzz Festival.

But for now, we had this to look forward to upon getting home:

Always Grateful,

~Andy

3rd Annual Foodbuzz Blogger Festival Taste Pavilion Part 1 of 2

After an unexpected late start to the morning, we eventually got on our way to the Taste Pavilion. By this time, we knew that it was unlikely we’d be able to make it to the Foodbuzz Dinner Gala or the Goodbye Brunch, so we wanted to enjoy the Taste Pavilion as much as possible.

The following are the Taste Pavilion Part 1 highlights, mostly presented in pictures.

City View at Metreon.

Jeff Hertzberg, M.D., and Zoe Francois handing out their latest book, Artisan Pizza and Flatbread in Five Minutes a Day.

Sebastopol’s Redwood Hill Farm & Creamery.

Enjoyed delicious cheese while learning about their wonderful goat farm.

Berkeley’s Bison Brewing, home to tasty, organic beer.

There she is.

It’s Ashley, AKA The Beer Wench.

Wifey chatting with owner and brewer of Bison Brewing, Daniel Del Grande, and Ashley.

San Francisco’s 21st Amendment Brewery.

Catching up with Nam from The Culinary Chronicles and Ellie from Fit for the Soul.

Tried out some of the wines from Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley, courtesy of the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley.

J. Lee Roy’s Dippin’ Sauce.

Stef Makes Beer

A highlight from this past summer was getting the chance to drink our friend Stef’s home-brewed beer.

This IPA, so crisp and refreshing, especially on that warm, summer day back in late May, was the first home-brewed beer that wifey and I ever had.

And with our growing interest in craft beers really taking off since the beginning of this year, we were very happy to see the home beer brewing process in person about a week after drinking this delicious IPA, thanks to the kind invitation from Stef, his lovely wife, and their charming kid.

Steeping the grains.

Beer recipe and instructions.

Main ingredients.

Mixing in malt to make wort and then adding hops.

Cleaning and sterilizing.

Wort ice bath.

The home beer brewer.

Transferring and then pitching yeast.

Waiting for fermentation and then the transfer to secondary fermentation (which would take 10-14 days) before bottling.

Watching the beer brewing process was completely interesting and inspiring. It’s a labor of love and something I hope to try one of these days soon.

Meanwhile, the kids had a great time playing.

Then, it was time for dinner.

To go along with some beers.

Thanks very much for an awesome time!

As cool as viewing the home brewing process was, it’s much cooler to be able to call you our friends.

Always Grateful,

~Andy
