2011 Summer L.A. Trip Day 1 of 4

Wifey, the toddler, and I embarked on a 4-day Los Angeles trip a week ago. The highlights for me from Day 1 are captured below:

On the drive down, the toddler wrote wifey a special note. We were blown away.

We had left at 6 a.m. on Sunday, and that really paid off because before we knew it, we had already arrived in the heart of Koreatown.

The Biergarten restaurant caught our eye, and we decided to check it out. They weren’t technically open yet, but we were welcomed in.

The beer selections got me excited.

For wifey, an Allagash White (a Belgian Style Wheat, AKA Belgian Witbier style – 5% ABV) from Maine’s Allagash Brewing Company.

And for me, a Stone Ruination IPA (7.7% ABV) from Stone Brewing Co., Escondido, CA. Yeah, I went big; it was my first Stone Brewing beer, and it was glorious.

And some food to go along with our beers.

Kimchi tofu – stir-fry kimchee, German sausage, onions, and tofu.

Sliders with cheese instead of peanut butter.

Wurstplatte of bratwurst and bockwurst.

With mustard and kimchi sauerkraut.

We all enjoyed the Biergarten. So glad to have stumbled upon it.

We missed meeting up with Lynn of The Actor’s Diet blog due to scheduling challenges, but she gave wifey a great tip about a children’s festival taking place at Paramount Studios.

I don’t get how the toddler managed to stay paint free.

My heart raced a bit seeing the Glee sign. I’m pretty sure that I’m the number one Gleek for my demographic – Old. Asian. Guy.

That said, I think I like The Glee Project more than Glee – just love Damian and Lindsay. I’m pretty sure that I’m also the number one Gleep. Interesting results from the season finale, yes?

The toddler got so much exercise at Paramount Studios. He ran all around the open space.

Which worked out well because he was in mellow spirits when we met up with our L.A. friends, Sophia and Mimi, at Yellow House Café.

These ladies absolutely glowed, and meeting up with them was great. We planned to see each other again in a couple days. At this point, we still needed to drive a bit to check in to our hotel.

Some enjoyable wines to unwind.

Copper Ridge Merlot.

Copper Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cheers!

Margaritas. Tasty. A bit too sweet.

Cheers again!

Koi pond on the ground floor.

Watching Disneyland fireworks.

And a video clip of the first few minutes of the fireworks. I just checked Disneyland’s website for their up-close video clip of the fireworks – amazing! But we were also very happy with what we got to see:

Before the first day of our L.A. trip came to an end, wifey and I agreed that the day could not have gone better.

Always Grateful,

~Andy

Plethora of Wine

A number of my cousins enjoy wine as well, and at our recent annual cousin’s reunion, there was plenty of great tasting wine.

2008 Sonoma Landing Pinot Noir, Sonoma County – Simply enjoyable. Very smooth.

2008 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir, Oregon – Really looked forward to this one from Oregon. Great quality.

Sokol Blosser Evolution, 14th Edition, Oregon – a satisfying crisp white.

2009 Groundwork Grenache, Santa Barbara County – Very nice.

2008 Elena Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County – I’ve had this enjoyable wine before.

I didn’t have the chance to taste any of the other wines.

2009 Erath Prince Hill Pinot Noir, Oregon.

2005 Pine Ridge Cave 7 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley.

2007 Round Pond Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley.

Newscastle Brown Ale – This beer was available. Had to have some.

2011 Father’s Day Lunch Outing

We celebrated Father’s Day last Sunday at a local winery, Clos LaChance, with my parents and my brother. The toddler started things off by tossing a card at his grandpa.

He then ran off to explore.

Perfect spot to enjoy lunch.

Wine tasting.

Cheers!

A bottle of chilled sauvignon blanc to accompany lunch.

Despite the wonderful weather and setting, there was drama. For most of my life, I was one of those that saw, and lived, life through rose-colored glasses. These days, unpleasant incidents provide reality checks, making me realize that while life is amazing, it’s not perfect. It’s sometimes hard. I’m happy to report that through work and effort, instead of the past method of getting by through cluelessness and/or denial, resolution was eventually achieved.

Always Grateful,

~Andy

A Cousin’s Wedding

Many fun weekends were spent with cousins throughout my childhood. With all of us pretty much doing our own things these days, weddings have typically provided the best chance for some of us to reconnect.

So last weekend, we were all dressed up with somewhere to go.

Go running that is, for the toddler.

And exploring.

Taking a break for snacks and celebrating.

Heading over to the appetizers and drinks area.

For some water.

And wine.

2009 J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Savignon – Paso Robles, CA.

This cabernet was excellent. Here are the winemaker’s comments:

A particularly dense vintage, this wine is red-purple in color with a bright hue. Aromas of black currant, plum and black cherry are lifted by a bouquet of vanilla, toasted pastry and spice from a year of barrel aging. The palate is bursting with primary fruit and a broad, rich tannin structure.

Jeff Meier, winemaker

2009 Cameron Hughes Lot 238 Chardonnay – Arroyo Seco, Monterey County, CA.

I enjoyed this chardonnay. Some tasting notes from their website:

Taste: Gorgeously ripe nose of honey drenched mango, coconut oil, and vanilla with just a kiss of jasmine. The nose leads into a supple mouthful of rich tropical fruit and graham cracker all riding on a honeyed beam of acidity. Most notably in the this wine, the pitch perfect fruit and acid tension.

Cheers!

Time to explore some more.

Circling back to the appetizers area.

On our way to the reception area.

More running around and exploring.

Back to the reception area.

Dinner time. Fun time.

The wedding was joyous and beautiful. Our best wishes to the bride and groom!

Always Grateful,

~Andy

Mini San Luis Obispo Getaway Part 4 of 5

We got to breakfast a bit later than planned.

Breakfast, here we come.

But it was all good.

The toddler really enjoyed the homestyle potatoes.

In the zone.

The usual oatmeal breakfast for wifey.

The usual.

A made-to-order omelette for yours truly.

Omelette.

We were now ready to roam around downtown San Luis Obispo.

Walk.

A certain shop is about to catch the toddler’s eye.

Walking some more.

It’s Powell’s Sweet Shoppe. Again.

Checking out the goods.

The toddler agreed to eat some candy only after lunch.

Speaking of lunch, we had worked up an appetite from all the walking around. So we headed to Firestone Grill, which a friendly person back at the hotel had highly recommended to us. “After 16 years, Firestone Grill finally has a website,” their Facebook page had announced earlier today.

Firestone Grill.

Hello.

Firestone salad – leaf lettuce, red onion, red bell pepper, tomato, feta cheese, and pine nuts.

Salad.

Kid burger.

Cheeseburger.

Tri-tip steak sandwich – sliced tri-tip and BBQ sauce on a french roll.

Tri-tip sandwich.

Basket of fries.

Fries.

We understood why Firestone Grill is so popular. We’ll certainly be back.

After lunch, we went looking for a winery. And found one quite easily.

Edna Valley Vineyard.

Hello.

Hi.

Hi again.

Hi. Hello.

Hello again again.

Notes 3.

I enjoyed the wine tasting at Edna Valley Vineyard. Wifey and the toddler enjoyed roaming around and checking out various shop items.

Ready to leave.

There was time for one more winery visit.

Winery directions.

Just like how we happened upon Edna Valley Vineyard, we arrived at Tolosa Winery by simple good fortune.

Heading inside.

Wet.

One of the tasting room staff offered to take our picture – very nice of her. Cheers!

Cheers!

I love looking at this stuff.

Cool view.

As do the toddler and wifey, apparently.

Where wine is made.

Quite an elegant tasting room.

Hi.

But for the toddler, it was all about being right outside the tasting room.

Fountain.

Even though it was wet outside, the toddler enjoyed running around quite a bit. He also checked out the water feature.

Checking out the fountain more closely.

Very intently.

Checking out the fountain extremely closely.

We all enjoyed Tolosa Winery a whole bunch!

As we made our way back to the hotel, it was bittersweet to think that there was only one day left before going home.

Always Grateful,

~Andy
