The food and beer scene in the South Bay continues its growth with the soon-to-open Steins Beer Garden & Restaurant in downtown Mountain View. Steins will have 30 taps and modern American comfort food led by executive chef and Bay Area native Colby Reade.

The person behind Steins is owner Ted Kim, a Bay Area native with over 20 years of small business experience, including success with the Northern California’s Paris Baguette stores. Steins is a salute to the traditional German beer hall and garden with an 8,000 square-foot domed room, the main bar in the center, and the keg room next to the main bar. In addition to this main “Beer Hall,” there are private rooms and a 4,000 square-foot patio with 2 beer gardens.

In all, the nearly 2-million dollar remodeling project will feature a 300-seat, 12,000 square-foot interior and outdoor space replete with details sure to take beer enthusiasm and dining to another level. For instance, in the Beer Hall will be long, communal tables custom-made from old reclaimed barn wood, 9 LED flat screen TVs, 2 8×10 foot projected custom-made TVs, and an enclosed space sectioned off just for families.

And is Ted a true beer fan? He answers, “Huge! I spent 6 months traveling Europe just to educate myself on beer for this restaurant. We plan on having 30 beers on tap, 20 set taps and 10 rotating with seasonal and new beers… We’ve hired an amazing executive chef to make great gourmet comfort food that pairs incredibly with our beers.”

Ted shares that his inspiration in opening Steins is all about “an inherent entrepreneurial spirit and an insatiable love for beer and food.”

For Steins’ beer taps, a state-of-the-art short draw system will help to deliver quality, fresh beer. Steins will require all servers, bartenders, and managers to undergo special training, including their own rigorous beer program, before qualifying to work.

Expect local farms and organic ingredients in chef Reade’s seasonal dishes, including “The Steins Burger” with fresh ground, grass-fed beef on house-baked brioched bun, cabbot cloth-bound cheddar, and aioli; fresh made pretzels with maldon sea salt and caraway ale mustard; and short rib sliders with balsamic red onion jam and roquette on fresh made mini brioche buns.
