San Jose Beer Events 2019

Meet the Brewers Beer Festival at Hermitage Brewing Company (2013)

Simply visiting your local beer spot can be an event in and of itself. But sometimes there are extra special events – new beer release parties, tap takeovers, beerwalks, beer festivals, beer weeks, beer dinners, etc. – taking place throughout San Jose and nearby.

These events help to elevate the local beer scene. And I love the fact that we’ve reached the point where it’s very challenging to keep track of all the special beer-related events going on in the South Bay.

That said, many of the San Jose beer events – as well as those nearby – are listed below. Also included are some quick news items.

Please contact me if I’m missing any.

If you’re especially excited about an upcoming event, consider checking in with the venue or event beforehand to confirm that the event is a go.

Keep in mind that local breweries and beer-centric establishments regularly host and feature other ongoing events and specials, not to mention the growing number of stores that sell good beer.

  • Fri., 5/31, 4-10pm: Release of Pete’s Support Belgian IPA at Santa Clara Valley Brewing. ‘Steve Donohue, who has been brewing beer in the Bay Area for more years he cares to admit, and Pete Slosberg, the legend behind Pete’s Wicked Ale, are long time friends. In 2009 Pete and Steve were chatting about collaborating on a beer, and Pete suggested they brew a Belgian IPA, which at that time was a hot new style, made popular by Achouffe (Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel). Pete got the recipe from Achouffe, and Steve was tasked with coming up with the name for the beer. The Name Steve came up with was Pete’s Support, because the beer was brewed with Pete Slosberg’s support. Now, say the name a few times fast and you’ll get it. The beer came out perfectly. The balance of a Belgian Style Tripel aggressively hopped with American hop varieties complement each other quite nicely. Steve submitted the beer to 2010 GABF under the “American-Belgo-Style Ale” category. When they announced at the GABF Awards Ceremony that Pete’s Support won the Bronze Medal in its category, the Pizza Port people were puzzled as they didn’t remember ever submitting an American Belgo beer. This happened almost 10 years ago. Some time in March of 2019, Pete and Steve were talking about recreating the beer. Now Steve Donohue is the brewmaster and one of the proprietors of Santa Clara Valley Brewing in San Jose, and the new version of the beer was brewed by SCVB.’

  • Thu., 12/19: Rabbit’s Foot Meadery Kicks Off 25th Anniversary Year. ‘It is hard to believe that this coming week marks one of the most significant milestones in our company’s history. It was early 1994 when we first made our application to the then Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF), now the Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), to operate as a bonded winery in California. I had to go back through our records to find the actual date, and I am glad I did because had I not looked I would have waited until January to tell you. On 19th December, 1994 Rabbit’s Foot Meadery was licensed as a commercial winery from our garage in Silicon Valley. Interestingly, we would start in our garage, much like other notable businesses. While other wineries made honey wine, we were the first company dedicated to only mead and its various styles – mead, cyser and braggots. As we enter our 25th year of business, I wanted to say thank you to all of our customers without whose patronage we would never have made it this far. Of course, none of this would have been possible without our staff over the years and, more importantly, my wife Maria who stuck with me through thick and thin. We are kicking off our 25th anniversary, starting this weekend, with 25% off select products throughout the year and a very, very special surprise.’
  • Fri., 12/27, 3-10pm: Hazy New Year and Jam the Batter Releases at Strike Brewing Company. ‘Hazy New Year and Jam the Batter are back to ring in the New Year! Notes of melon, berry, and citrus are all coming to the party! Hazy New Year (Hazy IPA) returns just in time to help celebrate 2020! Don your party hat (or a lampshade, we won’t judge) and grab a glass! White wheat and oats help make this wonderfully aromatic beer smooth as silk. Jam the Batter is back, and this time better than ever! This kettle sour has a base of oats and lactose for a creamy semi-sweet body. Hundreds of pounds of raspberries from Gizdich Ranch in Watsonville and a touch of Madagascar Vanilla were then added, giving this brew an incredible berry punch. Both beers available on draft and in 4-packs on Friday, December 27th at both taprooms.’
